Background

On 3rd April 1997, the TR Group of Companies, comprising Technology Resources Berhad, Malaysia Airlines Berhad, Cellular Communications Network Sdn. Bhd. and Malaysian Helicopter Services Berhad, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Universiti Putra Malaysia to set up the Malaysian Graduate School of Management. The Malaysian Graduate School of Management (MGSM) is established as the leading institution to provide postgraduate education and traning in the field of business management. By colaborating with the Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia, MGSM will offer a variety of post-graduate and executive development programmes, which was formerly offered by the Faculty Economics and Management, UPM. The Faculty Economics and Management, UPM was first established in 1974 as the Faculty of Resource Economics and Agribusiness. Since then, the Faculty was expended in terms of student enrolment, academic programmes and academic staff.

The first masters students in Management of Universiti Putra Malaysia graduated in 1987. However, the Graduate School of Management-Universiti Putra Malaysia (GSM-UPM), was established in 1997, and restructured in 2001 as a specialist institution to provide postgraduate education and traning in business management. It offers a variety of postgraduate programmes (MBA,MM,MS and PhD) and executive development programmes foe all levels of management. GSM-UPM was ranked the seventh best MBA school in South East Asia 2003 and the number 1 in the country in the Asia Inc. Magazine August 2003 and September 2004 issues.

The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia has announced Graduate School of Management (GSM) of Universiti Putra Malaysia and Graduate Schook of Business (GSB) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as Top Business Schools (TBS) in Malaysia on 24th October 2007. The main objectives of the appointment is to make both business schools reach international standard, at par with other world-class business schools and with the main focus on the MBA programmes.
